In New York City, New York, Alexandria was born on October 13, 1989, into a low-income family of Puerto Rican immigrants. She has a younger brother named Gabriel. When her father died of lung cancer, young Alexandria had to start working as a bartender in a local restaurant to pay her family’s bills. Despite all the hardship, she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations at Boston University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
As an underdog, she won the Democratic Party’s primary election and eventually the U.S. House of Representatives seat. In January 2019, Ocasio-Cortez made history as the youngest woman and youngest Latina ever sworn into Congress.
